Significance
The Battle of Guadalcanal was a major victory for the Allies. It showed the resilience of Japanese soldiers and their refusal to surrender which encouraged the use of the atomic bomb later in the war. It also sparked an Allied offensive in the Pacific that would ultimately bring the US to the gates of Tokyo by 1945. The capture of Guadalcanal also saved a major line of communication and trade between New Zealand, Australia, and The US, as well as protecting Australia from any form of Japanese invasion.
